Our Travel Secrets from Decades of Trips to Tahoe

Due to Maps, Live Video and detailed info, this page is best used on a PC, Laptop or Tablet.

What Route am I Going to Take?

Whether you head east to Olympic Valley or west back toward Sacramento, you have two routes to choose from: Hwy 80 to Truckee to reach Olympic Valley, or Hwy 50 to South Lake and the east side of the lake to reach Olympic Valley. If Highway 80 is closed, check Hwy 50 road conditions. During storm cycles, roads can close, be delayed, or close and reopen regularly.

  1. To confirm your route, use the California Department of Transportation’s CA Road Information (link below). Enter Highways 80 and 50 and read the results carefully.
  2. If the highway is closed, select another route or check back in 30 minutes. 80 closes more often than 50. Both highways will reopen if closed. Scroll through the Turn-by-Turn panel to see alerts and requirements.
  3. Use the correct originating city to map your route and check conditions at Davis, CA if coming from the Bay Area.

If traveling during a winter weather cycle, you must have one of: all-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or chains/cables. If you bring cables, practice installing them before your trip (YouTube tutorials help). Bring a cheap rain suit and thin neoprene gloves in case you need to install cables in the cold and wet.

Headed into a Big Storm?

Book hotels with no-fee cancellation along your route — big storm events can cause hard closures and hotels fill up fast. Book via Booking.com or Priceline, or call the property directly. Heading up the mountain via Hwy 80: Roseville, Auburn, and Colfax are good cities to book along the route. Via Hwy 50: Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe. Once the highway reopens, you can get back on the road to your HostedVacation.

Best DOT Map for Road Conditions

Use the Options button to select “Traffic,” “Cameras,” “Chain Control,” and “Full Closure.” Enter “80”; if closed, check “50” the same way. All routes are subject to change, so check throughout your trip.

Cozy condo fireplace

House Tips

Temperature & village ambiance

Temperature

We recommend leaving the heat off in winter and using the fireplace to warm up. The radiated heat from the building is a constant source of warmth, and heat rises very slowly, so the building will be naturally warm. If you set the thermostat over 65, you overheat the condo. If needed, we recommend using the fireplace for quick heat and comfort, and it is easier to control. If you use the thermostat on the wall, set it at 62 and wait 2-4 hours to decide. Only increase the heat one degree at a time so you don’t fry… Open the windows, and if you need to cool down.

During summer warm spells, in the late summer season, there is a AC unit in the living room. If it’s a warm day and you are out for the day, feel free to leave the AC on all day, leaving the bedroom doors open.

Village Ambiance and Sound

We are in the middle of an active ski resort village, and the sounds are a natural part of the ambiance and convenience of the location, close to ski lifts, the mountain, and food & beverage venues for all village condos. Getting quiet time is also important, so a couple of requests and techniques can help balance comfort and convenience.

In-building
We request that guests respect our “in-building” 9pm–8am quiet time. In-building quiet time is for in-building activities to respect the neighbors above, below, and sides of you, and your neighbors to respect you. Refer any noise complaints to the front desk at 530-584-1000 x 1
Outside of Building
All condos in the village have the natural sounds of a resort village. However, this can be mitigated with a few simple techniques. Air purifiers are excellent sources of white noise and are adjustable. They should be placed on the outer walls between you and the noise source. If you want windows open, you can open them in the living room and close them in the bedroom. And the nightstand should have earplugs if you like. Refer any noise complaints to the front desk at 530-584-1000 x 1

Tahoe Water Adventures

These guys are very highly rated on Yelp and have good prices. We highly recommend the 2-hour boat with a captain with wakeboarding or wake surfing. You can charter your own, charter with a captain, or jet ski. They have coupon codes on their booking site. Check the site and call to make sure you know what you are getting, then you can book online with the coupon code. Book to leave before 1pm; it can get windy later, but not too early. Check the temps; they may be chilly. Also if you have wet suits, bring them, it can make the experience more comfortable.

Truckee River

Super fun for all ages, bring a cooler with whatever beverages you like and food too. Stop off and take breaks, you may meet new people we really enjoy it. Go later in the day it can be much warmer and the river can cool you off. Having food and a few drinks after at the River Ranch Deck can really make for a great afternoon.

Great Ride, Walk or Run, from the Village at Squaw. Great scenery, only a few inclines and equal downhills. Make it an adventure to charge to the lake for swimming, sunbathing, and dining. Or make it a slow meander, pack a picnic stop off the riverside, and enjoy the cool water and scenery. This is for the whole family or just a peaceful time for 1 or 2.
